Terry Johnson’s philosophy serves the food service noncommissioned officer in charge for Life Support Area Fist during Natural Fire 10 well. Johnson, from the 9th Military Police Detachment in Mannheim, Germany, is working out of a Mobile Kitchen Trailer instead of his regular dining facility. The meal tent is named “The Cobra Café” after an encounter he had with a snake during its construction.“My job here is to make sure the troops get fed,” say Johnson, “and making sure the troops get a meal they can enjoy and are happy with, making this mission successful.”From Buffalo chicken to fresh fruits and vegetables, troops appreciate the effort to get hot, fresh food. When it comes to cooking and taking care of soldiers, little details can make a big difference.“Because we’re food service, we’re the first ones up in the morning and the last ones down at night.” This is why, Johnson explains, he positioned his Soldiers’ cots near the entrances to the sleep tent, “so it’s easier for my Soldiers to get in and out of the tent without interrupting all of the other troops.” “A typical day, we get up at 0200 in the morning and have to work until approximately 2030 at night and have to do it all over again. Pretty long days. Pretty hot days,” says Sgt. Kevin Tolefree, 554th Military Police Company. “It makes it all worthwhile when you see the morale of the soldiers when they come in and get fed , and they enjoy the chow.”While all of the cooks working at the Cobra Café serve under the 18th Military Police Brigade, they have been pulled from different companies. That means Johnson’s team is comprised of a lot of personnel he’s never worked with before, including Tolefree.Tolefree’s impression of Johnson so far, “He’s very demanding. He wants the right thing done regardless of situation. He’s very straight forward and by the book. All in all, he’s a good NCO” Troops participating in Natural Fire 10 come from six different countries: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United States. While the focus of the Cobra Café is the U.S. forces, it has also hosted partnership events for the leadership of the East African partner nation militaries.“It was a good experience seeing all the different leaders. We took pride in having fresh fruit, snacks, and juice so they could have a good meeting,” Tolefree says.Tolefree and Johnson also went over to the Kenyan encampment recently. The experience was eye opening for Tolefree, “We have it kind of easy compared to what they do over there, but the food was good.”PHOTO CAPTION: 091018-A-1211N-063 Sgt.
