| 説明 | VINTAGE NORTHERN CONSTABULARY: a couple of great shots of the Longhope (Orkney) Beat vehicle BMC Minivan NBS396M taken in 1975, just after Northern Constabulary was created (on 16.5.1975).The vehicle would have been registered - in 1973/74 - to the PREVIOUS version of Northern Constabulary (Caithness-Orkney-Shetland). Note the van had a radio and wing mirrors - but NO blue light.Longhope Beat - a one-officer station - covered the islands of South Walls and Hoy to the south and west of the Orkney Mainland, and the area was an especially busy place during both World Wars when the British Grand Fleet was based at Scapa Flow.On 17 March 1969 the area suffered one of the worst tragedies in British lifeboat history when the Longhope lifeboat, T.G.B., capsized with the loss of all eight crew after answering a mayday call during severe storms. Many thanks to JRW379 for the photos. |
