This year’s stimulus package included $8 billion for high-speed rail — for which, says DeFazio, the feds have received several hundred billion dollars’ worth of applications, including a Northwest route from Eugene to Vancouver, B.C. “By back-of-the-envelope estimates, a national system would cost $400 billion to $500 billion. That’s a huge amount,” says DeFazio blandly. “That’s almost 70 percent of what we spent in one day to bail out Wall Street.” |
