| 説明 | 10 October 2009. Dowsett Road, Tottenham.Using a plastic bag, I picked-up the dead rat by its tail and put it in the nearby litter-bin.I've never held a rat before and was surprised how heavy it was.══════════════Local newspapers occasionally headline residents' and traders' complaints about rats. Here's an example from the Hornsey Journal. "A Plague of Rats" reports on Crouch End restaurateurs kicking up a stink about ripped food waste bags left out for collection. Have the numbers of rats increased? Ray Dodds, my friend and former Haringey councillor, thinks that pre-privatisaton and abolition of the GLC, there was far greater co-ordination between the local councils, Railtrack/Network Rail and the Water companies in baiting. Which kept the rat population under greater control.Milder winters are another factor. And a supply of food left on the street or in an alleyway will help keep all rodents sleek and well-fed.______________§ Click to see Jeanette Sitton's photo of a butterfly and a rat.§ This week I learned that our English word 'rodent' comes from the Latin rodere = to gnaw. Which is also Sanskrit: radati = 'he gnaws'. |
