| 説明 | An early 1970s "third generation" Plymouth Barracuda (badged 'cuda) - convertible manufactured by Chrysler. The four headlights and "shark's gills" styling suggest a 1971 model. It was a class of vehicle that was known as a pony car.It could be fitted with a monstrous 7 litre V8 hemi engine. One version of this car had a "factory gate" rating of about 7 mpg. By comparison, the most efficient Toyota iQ model in the UK offers an average fuel consumption of 65 mpg. If the "S" in the personalised License Place registration is a letter, it was originally registered to another vehicle between 1932 to 1963. If it is really a (wholly illegally) modified number "5", then it was first registered before 1932. It is fair to say that the owner of the vehicle is not really seeking a cloak of anonymity. When I took this picture in July 2009, an imperial (UK) gallon of petrol cost £4.68p; the (under 18 years of age) UK National Minimum Wage was £3.53 per hour.In 1970 a US gallon of gas cost just 35¢; the U.S. Federal Minimum Wage in 1970 was $1.45¢.Excluding income tax, to drive the distance of 53 miles from Brighton to London, and then back, a school leaver in the UK would need to work 20 hours just to pay for the petrol. (It is however unlikely that a British 17 year old would ever be offered Insurance for this car. )In the US in 1970 the equivalent gas money would have taken just over 4 hours to earn. For the most part, fabulous cars like these trundled cheerly down the evolutionary dead end of the 1973 "Arab Oil Crisis".The street where the car is parked is fortuitously one way. But the size of the car illustrates a problem with many "old world" European towns and cities. Roads built for the occasional horse and cart delivery are much too narrow for motor vehicles, but it was almost never subsequently economic to raze the houses and rebuild a wider street. The shadows in this starkly lit image have been lightened to reveal extra detail. |
