| 説明 | Built in 1844 as a Free Church (just one year after the Disruption), the congregation was one that eventually rejoined the Established Church in 1929 (after the Free Church had merged with the United Presbyterians, to form the United Free Church... Ecclesiastical history in Scotland is so much fun!) Until 1988 this building continued as the Church of Scotland before the congregation merged with that of the the Parish Church which was renamed St Andrew's Blackadder. The building is now home to the Baptist Church - rounding off a rather eventful century and a half...This is part of the south wall of the porch, which along with the tower was added by Honeyman and Keppie in 1889.Historic Scotland refer to a "Tree of Life" with "inscribed ribbon" - this is quite clearly the Burning Bush, which along with the inscription nec tamen consumebatur (Yet is was not consumed), is quite clearly the Church of Scotland's logo... Therefore this sculptured relief panel must have been added after 1929... The clues are there: the stone panel on which it sits is clearly a later stone... The question is - was there something there before? |
