| 説明 | Morchard on the edge of Goyder’s Line. The town was named by the Acting Governor Sir Samuel Way (also the Chief Justice of SA) after his birthplace Morchard Bishops in Devonshire. The town was established in 1876 in the Hundred of Coomooroo. The first land sales in the township occurred in September 1877 with quite a few selling. Land was reserved for a school and a cemetery. The town was established next to St Peter’s boiling down works which closed in 1878 as the town emerged. A general store opened in Morchard in November 1877 by the store keeper of Gladstone. The Bible Christian Methodist started services in a cottage that belonged to St Peters boiling down works in 1877 and then purchased a block of land for a church in 1877. A minister was appointed to the town in 1878 but the church was not opened until July 1879. It now lies in a derelict state beside the later Methodist Church which was built in 1924. By the end of 1877 the hotel (for J Cummins) was under construction as was a blacksmiths and a butcher shop. The hotel was first licenced in June 1878 with George Dowdy as the publican. The first Post Office opened in January 1878. In 1878 many public meetings were held to try and convince the government to build the railway from Orroroo via Morchard to Pichi Rich and Quorn but the government chose a route further east( and flatter and cheaper) via Carrieton and Hammond. The state school opened in 1880 and finally closed in 1941. Children were then bussed to Orroroo. The residents of the town asked the government for a block of land for an institute building in 1890 and they began fund raising at that time. The stone Morchard Institute opened in March 1891. It still stands in the little ghost town. |
