| 説明 | I’m a big sucker for these modern weird science fiction movies. I love films like Arrival, Midnight Special, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Blade Runner 2049, and of course Ex-Machina, directed by the same director of Annihilation! Now I’ve never read the book that this film was based on, but I know some who have and they loved the book. From the few trailers of this film I saw of this film, I was hooked. Trippy visuals, beautiful cinematography, weird sounds, a mysterious and fantastical setting, what more could I possibly ask for! Anyways, I went into this film late last night, so there was barely anyone in the theater, which was all for the better so there was no distractions. Was Annihilation a new science fiction classic, or is it just too weird to connect with? Let’s check it out!Good: Now the best way to review this movie for you guys is to be as vague about it as possible, because I believe it’s best to know as little about this film as possible going into it. The themes of Annihilation very much reminded me of one of my favorite films, The Thing. It evokes a very intelligent conversation of the dissection between good and evil and how nature can truly be one of the two. In a very similar sense of The Thing, this film start to deconstruct allegiances of the main characters with anxiety and fear. Speaking of fear, this movie does have some great scares, but not really in a way of classic horror films, this horror really taps into our human instinct of the fear of the unknown. Now these themes wouldn’t have been executed well if it weren’t for the great cast. It’s funny because I just watched Natalie Portman sleepwalk through Thor: The Dark World, so it was really awesome to watch her to push herself and give an incredible performance in this film. Her character, along with the other main characters were so well written and acted that I barely even noticed that the main team in this film where all women. Sure there was the “girl power” message in this film, but I never found the film bashing me over the head with this message, but it was still really powerful. I didn’t really see this team as a team of all women just to be all women, I saw a team of intelligent and well written humans that just so happened to be human. I would like to go more into story details, but as I said, I don’t want to spoil anything so I’m going to keep it short. The last things I’d like to say is that the visuals were incredible, beautiful, and horrifying, and I don’t think the film would’ve worked as well if the visual effects weren’t so on point. Also… The ending… I’ve seen a lot of debates about the ending, so all I’m going to say is that it worked for me. Bad: Now my problems with the film are pretty spoilery, so I’m going to keep it very vague. My first complaint is that there’s this one subplot about Portman’s character that shows up out of nowhere towards the end that I feel like had no business in the movie and could’ve been completely cut from the film. I see what Garland was trying to do, it was trying to give more background to Portman’s character, but I thought she was developed enough without that subplot. My last problem is that there are a few events in this movie that seemed pretty rushed just to get to the end of the movie I wished were drawn out a bit more, because if they were drawn out, I think it would’ve been more powerful for the arc of certain characters.Overall, Annihilation was a fantastic science fiction movie. The times we are living in today are quite similar to what was going on in the early 80’s when films like The Thing came out, so it makes sense that we’re getting a resurgence of these intelligent science fiction films in theaters. Besides a pretty out of place subplot and some pacing at some points in the movie. Annihilation certainly stacks up with the rest of these modern science fiction films, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite of the bunch that I mentioned at the beginning of the review. Alex Garland is a role right now with two incredible science fiction films, and I can’t wait to see what he does next. Fingers crossed he gets to direct that Swamp Thing movie he was talking about earlier this week! For these reasons, I’m going to give Annihilation a 9/10. Have you seen Annihilation? If you have, let me know what you thought of it in the comments below, keep it spoiler free! |
