In the 1970s, a soil scientist discovered that the soil characteristics in Elgin are very similar to that of Burgandy, France, and winemaking was introduced to the area. There are presently 9 vinyards in the area, and Elgin hosts several wine festivals yearly.Ranchers also live on the land in rural southestern Arizona, and many historic windmills of the area, like this Star Zephyr, still operate today, pumping water for the ranch (and vinyard) needs. |
