| 説明 | In Roman times the far eastern coastline of Kent ran between Reculver and Richborough. The land which now includes Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate was on an island 2 miles out to sea, called The Isle of Thanet .The water separating the island from the mainland was known as the Watsum Channel. The Romans considered this channel very important and built forts at Reculver and Richborough to protect it.In 449 The Vikings, under Hengist, landed at Thanet, rowed up the Watsum Channel and attacked Canterbury. In 1949, to commemorate this event, a replica Viking ship, manned by Danes, was rowed across The North Sea and landed at Main Bay in Broadstairs. Main Bay was officially renamed Viking Bay from this dayDue to silting up, The Isle of Thanet is no longer an island but the local government area is called Thanet and many maps still show this area as The Isle Of Thanet. The Vikings actually landed at Pegwell , a short distance from Broadstairs. The Longboat has been restored and is above the beach at Cliffs End . |
