説明Balhannah – fruit and nursery town.In 1839 the Mt Barker Special Survey of 4,000 acres for William Hampden Dutton, Duncan McFarlane and John Finniss was conducted. On part of Dutton’s land near the Onkaparinga River a small town was laid out in early 1840. A Scot called James Thomas was the first settler on an 80 acre section which he named Balhannah after his sister Hannah and his mother Belle. He opened a small inn or pub on his land for thirsty travellers in 1840. The first settlers grew maize, potatoes and wheat and they kept horses, pigs and cows. The town started to develop in 1850 with the first Post Office opening and the Gold Cross Hotel and in 1851 George Fenwick opened the first private school. The government school opened in 1857. In 1855 a new road was surveyed to shorten the distance between Balhannah and Adelaide by going via Greenhill Road. This small town was excited when the railway arrived 1883 with a branch line to Mt Pleasant opening in 1918. The Institute here was built in 1920 as a World War One Memorial. The first St Thomas’ Anglican Church was built 1848 being replaced by the current church in 1865. The first Methodist Church was built in 1859. Fruit trees grew well in the valley here and in 1908 Wicks Nurseries were established to provide peaches, apricots, plums and almonds for commercial growers. From 1890 to 1914 a jam factory operated in the town and in 1919 a Cold Stores was formed to manage the export of apples to England. A saw mill operated to make packing case for the apples and in 1894, once butter could be refrigerated for export to England, a butter factory was opened. It closed in 1929. Potatoes remain as a major crop of the district.
