説明 | This could be Washington DC, with the classical dome, pediment and pillars. In fact, it's the Pantheon, originally an eighteenth-century church, which was put to secular use by the infant French Republic after the Revolution of 1789 as a resting place for their dead heroes. This remains its purpose today: a mausoleum for eminent Frenchmen and - though only recently - women.Classical influences dominated the architecture and thinking of the eighteenth century. America and France were the two great republics founded in that era, following their world-shaking revolutions of 1776 and 1789 respectively. So it is not surprising that some of their official monuments look similar. |
