| 説明 | Rivalling, and often exceeding the London plane in size are these towering giants who appear throughout the park, but in particular feature here alongside the new glass extension to Whitworth Art Gallery.Tall and graceful, the ash is one of our few native trees and is easily recognised in winter by its smooth grey twigs, fissured bark and hard, black leaf buds. It is the third most common tree in Britain and makes up 30% of our woodland cover. Ash is a very long-lived tree, reaching up to 400 years old and growing to a height of 35 metres. Ash trees make the perfect habitat for a multitude of wildlife. The airy canopy and early leaf-fall allows sunlight to reach the woodland floor, providing perfect conditions for wildflowers. Bullfinches may eat the seeds and woodpeckers, owls, redstarts and nuthatches use the trees for nesting. Ash bark on older trees such as these is often covered with lichen and mosses.uom.treetrail.co.uk/#Ashen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fraxinus_excelsior |
