| 説明 | This palace, built by Thirumalai Nayak in 1636 AD is a splendid example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. This is a view from the large courtyard which is surrounded by massive circular pillars.The Sad StoryMost of this palace building was demolished by the builder's grandson, Chockanatha Nayak, who ruled Madurai from 1662-82 and the valuables like jewels, woodcarvings etc were shifted in order to build his own palace at Trichy. It was a common practice to destroy palaces and build new one when a new ruler arrives. However, they spared temples and other places of worship.It is said that only one tenth of the actual palace exists today of which only one fourth of it is allowed for visitors. Ruins of the palace's pillars can be seen as far as a kilometre from here. For a period this courtyard was used as a cattle shed before it was discovered and partially restored little by Madras Governor Lord Napier in 1866 -72. |
