説明 | Near the start of our kayaking trip on Milford Sound, we passed Stirling Falls, which is a big impressive waterfall pouring down the cliff face. Jimmy the guide had mentioned we could kayak under a waterfall but I hadn't imagined he meant anything quite this big... When he asked if anyone was up for it, we nodded, but with a bit of trepidation. The two Canadian girls on our trip said they would do it too. Jimmy demonstrated by paddling hard straight at the waterfall then letting the wind that comes off it blow him out again. He made it look easy but we made a pig's ear of our first attempt, coming in too far across and at too much of an oblique angle. It was freezing cold and the sheer force of the water coming down creates an unbelievably strong wind that pushes you away very hard indeed. We had a second attempt and got it right, and it was like paddling into a maelstrom - a very cold one - and we couldn't see a thing through the spray and wind either. It was what you might call invigorating! |
