説明Recent photo of the tomato horn worm (that I photographed and posted some days ago) taken down into the jar.The worm was so intriguing to me, and the tales put into comments on the other photos of my horn worm here on flickr of how they were saved and kept as er, "pets" by children and allowed to evolve into their pupa stage and then refrigerated for the winter after which they were brought out again and allowed to hatch into hawk or sphinx moths (phew!) that I decided to save this guy myself! I kept it in a jar with air holes in the lid for several days, sort of out of sight (with me, that means "out of mind," sigh). The next time I looked—YIKES!—there were all these little white cocoons covering it!To my great surprise, it had been chosen as a host for the larva of the draconid wasp and the horn worm was now sprouting lots of tiny white cocoons (smaller than a grain of rice) in which the wasps were developing, and subsequently successfully hatched out.The draconid wasps lay their eggs under the skin of the tomato horn worm (YUUUUK!) and live as parasites on it and in the process cause the death of the horn worm. Then, the wasp larva hatch out and begin their cycle of predation on the horn worms by using them as hosts for their next generations. Here's a great little tutorial, with accompanying photos, on the tomato horn worm and the draconid wasp:www.gardengrapevine.com/HornWormBraconidWasp.htmlBy Jove, there is justice in the gardener's world after all!
