説明On 31 December, 1883, one of Ettie Rout’s controversial Volunteer Sisters of the First World War, Eileen Nielson, was born.Eileen was in the first contingent of volunteers to sail to Egypt in 1915, working at first in a YMCA canteen at Esbekia gardens in Cairo before moving on to hospital work in Alexandria. Ettie Rout, more famous for her controversial work supplying soldiers with condoms, also courted much criticism for her scheme to send unqualified women to the war zones. Working from Christchurch, her aim was to provide sister orderlies to various hospitals but her scheme was not inaugurated with the approval of either the Ministry of Defence or the Ministry of Public Health. Eileen was already in Egypt when Minister of Defence James Allen announced that any new recruits to the scheme would have a wasted journey as they would not be allowed to land. But he was proved incorrect. Eileen was later highly critical of Ettie Rout for committing women with no official status to such a undertaking without working out the details. Eileen said that while the Volunteer Sisters had done much good at no cost to New Zealand “Our own Country’s officials treated us as if we were a band of Adventuresses, wicked women or some such.” Ettie Rout also hit back at the criticism. In a letter published in The Dominion in April 1916 she said: “This canteen at the Esbekiah Gardens is crowded with thousands of soldiers. All the boys appreciate the Volunteer Sisters … (and say) The New Zealand people could not have sent us a better Christmas present.”Shown here is the YMCA canteen at Esbekiah Gardens attended by women who left New Zealand in the same contingent as Eileen Nielson.Archives reference: AD1 969 49/200collections.archives.govt.nz/web/arena/search#/?q=R22433496 More information can be found here: teara.govt.nz/en/biographies/3s5/savell-edith-alma-eileen For updates on our On This Day series and news from Archives New Zealand, follow us on Twitter www.twitter.com/ArchivesNZ Material from Archives New Zealand Te Rua Mahara o te Kāwanatanga
