| 説明 | This was part of the private collection of cacti and succulents at Manor Nursery, Angmering, West Sussex. The collection was started in 1948. The nursery is now gone. The collection has been dispersed to various new locations.Synonyms include Cereus pringlei, Pilocereus pringlei, Pachycereus calvus.Known in English as Cardon, Elephant Cactus and Mexican Giant Cactus. In Spanish it is commonly known as Cardon Gigante, Cardon Pelon, Sagueso or Sahuaso.Native of central Baja California and the Sonoran Desert. The Cardon from Baja California looks like the Saguaro of Arizona but grows somewhat thicker and does fine under more humid conditions that would kill the Arizona giant cactus. It is named after Cyrus Guernsey Pringle [1838-1911].Flowers only when mature, the white flowers are 3 inches long (8 cm), and come in the spring, at the top of the stems. The base of the flower is hidden in a mass of hair coming from the areole. The fruit is rich in pectin and is often used to make jellies. The fruits are also harvested by the Seri, the stems are used medicinally, and containers have been fashioned from portions of stems that react to woodpecker holes. |
