The history of the BJ 212 is an interesting one. According to a post by Erik ( www.chinesecars.net ) on China Car Forums, the Beijing BJ 212 was developed from 1963-1964 by Beijing Auto Works (BAW) and made its first public appearance at Tiananmen Square in Beijing during the start of the Cultural Revolution and was used as Mao Zedong's inspection car. The Beijing BJ 212 was probably inspired by UAZ 469, since first prototypes appeared in 1960-1961.
