| 説明 | Wednesday July 15th - Reflectors, Headlights, and more reflectors. (Aka - research)I haven't talked a lot about my research recently - here is an absurd update:So - almost all car lights (headlights, fog lights, turn signals etc) in the past 10 years have been built using faceted reflectors to distribute the light. Traditionally, the dish shaped reflector which held the bulb scattered light in all directions, and it was properly directed with a Fresnel lens. (The plastic on the front of the lights thats not clear but looks like it has lines in it). However, since crazy CAD programs have allowed custom building and modeling, the reflectors (sitting behind the bulbs) are no longer just curved, they are made up of many "flat" mirror like strips which properly direct the light. (Go look at your car... well if its less than about 8 years old). I am working on translating that technology to reflectors which can be used for underwater photography.Where to start experimentally - we need to test some headlights, and we need to figure out exactly how the light is reflected. SO off to the dealer to find some lights. My advisor and I took a trip last week to Auto Zone, they thought we were crazy - especially when it was explained as a science fair project! They didn't have what we needed - so I went back to my desk and did some research. Today John (an Engineer) and I went searching for lights. It was awesome! And a total joke. Imagine these 2 people (John looks like he belongs in the shop - he doesn't look like an awkward nerd) walking around the dealers lots - squatting down in front of vehicles, checking out the headlights. Ya! Then we would figure out what we wanted, and went and talked to the parts department. Of course, when they said what model - we said we didn't care, as long as it was "like - insert model here" at which point they became suspicious and started asking what we were using it for. John basically just said photography lighting... that only worked for so long. Eventually they found out we wanted to put it on underwater robots - crazy people! This chain of events happened about 5 times, and the only thing we walked away with was a Chevy Silvarado fog light... people don't keep stock in this state, your inventory gets taxed (!?).Quotes from the day:"You know the kind of headlights that look like they have lots of mirrors and stuff?""Nice headlights" (That was a little awkward when the salesman came to talk to us)"They are built with computers and stuff" - John explaining how faceted reflectors are madeAnd the best on the day:"Oh - I thought you guys were using them for horticultural purposes" YES! The guy at Napa Auto Parts thought we were growing weed!!! if only he knew what we were REALLY doing! |
