| 説明 | This document contains descriptions of Andrew Marshall’s conditions, for which he was brought into Seacliff. Among these are: ‘Nervous tremor, excitement, unable to control emotions, various delusionsBelieves himself to be the inspected of a murder’Later on Ah Lee issued a statement, in which he claimed that he had helped Lee Guy commit the murder. However, he later retracted this statement and said he was very sorry about this misunderstanding. He said that the interpreter had convinced him to sign this statement with the promise that it would help him to convince people of his innocence. The interpreter denied all this. When the court could not find evidence to convict Lee Guy of the crime, they claimed that the statement was really an expression of Ah Lee’s own guilt, and they used this confession to convict him. The court’s decision was unanimous and very few voices of dissent made themselves heard. Among these rare objections were the Taranaki Herald, whose report at the time was very critical of the process, and Bishop Nevill, who spoke to Ah Lee personally while he was awaiting his execution. Apparently Nevill brought a different interpreter and let Ah Lee tell his side of the story. Ah Lee essentially told the Bishop that he had an alibi, and gave him the name of the man who could confirm it. Nevill sent a letter to the court and the press, explaining that Ah Lee’s explanation was easily verifiable, and asked for a delay of the sentence, to allow him to find out whether what Ah Lee had told him was true.[Mount Ida Chronicle, 2 September 1880, Page 2, Papers Past] paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/MIC18800902.2.6 [Cromwell Argus, 9 November 1880, Page 6, Papers Past] paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CROMARG18801109.2.14 [Mount Ida Chronicle, 9 November 1880, page 5, Papers Past] paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CROMARG18801109.2.8Archives New Zealand Reference: Seacliff Mental Hospital Statutory Admission DAHI 19850 D266/9 /1370 / R25257513collections.archives.govt.nz/web/arena/search#/?q=25257513For more information email Dunedin.archives@dia.govt.nzand see also: Ng, James.
