| 説明 | This famous structure, known today as the Colosseum, was known in antiquity as the Flavian Amphitheater. This largest of all amphitheaters was amazingly begun and completed in 8 years by the Flavian dynasty rulers Vespasian and his son Titus from 72 A.D. to 80 A.D. A theater was the architectural aspect of the development of stage arts by the Greeks. It was adopted by the Romans in this instance with the ingenious advancement of combining two Greek theaters, end to end, to make an oval structure known as an amphi-theater. The stage arts were also adopted in a less ingenious but rather more brutal form. Here took place the art of the killing for entertainment exotic animals, gladiators and criminals. For all the civilizational advancements by the Romans that we appreciate, and seem familiar to us today, this is one aspect of them that vividly reminds us of their foreignness. |
