It is named after the Russian Shilka River. Afghan soldiers nicknamed it the "sewing machine" due to the sound of firing guns and because of the similarity of the name "Shilka" to the Russian word "шить" (Russian pronunciation: [ʂitʲ], meaning "to sew").
