説明 | dustinaskins.com/photos/20070126.htmlMy occasional rides on the Trinity Railway Express have all been very eventful. Yesterday morning on a trip to SEW Dallas I decided to write as I rode, the result is below...Rail WritingIm riding the train to Dallas. I love it. The train is one of the defining factors of community I feel. Distant laughter by commuters who otherwise wouldn’t have known each other; and the regulars who make morning exchanges…“How goes it this mornin’?”“Well, I woke up…and you know that’s…”Two in unison, “…a good start.”“Yup, a good start.”These are the real regulars. The people who know what car they’re going to ride in and who they’re going to see. And for those regulars who prefer to--like the train itself--stick to a set path, even know what they’ll say. An act rehearsed every morning before day break. But even these regulars haven’t completely given into realities of the rail. When boarding, the regulars and the newcomers alike seek out the seat farthest from one another. Most know that in three or four stops they’ll be packed in; their temporary buffer gone. But it’s like your morning coffee, a needed transition into the day. Not all enjoy jumping into a cold swimming pool. Most, toe by toe, ease in and let their skin cells adapt and their brain reconcile the change. So now, well adapted, we all perform in unison. Swaying side to side as the train grinds along the rails. By now most of us have taken in our car mates. Elbow to elbow we’ve given a nod or at least an eye to the other. Well…except the woman next to me today, she had an act of her own to do. Large paper towel pulled from pocket, pressed to nose, and the night’s fluids dramatically forced from her nostrils. You can’t fake snot, but I half-wonder if this is a ploy, a ploy to deter those still looking for a seat. But they sit anyway, possibly more of a regular than me. They know she’s about to pull out a crossword and clear her throat loudly, ten times more often than she completes a piece of her puzzle.I occasionally look up from writing. I catch the eye of a man on the second level of the car, eyeing me from upstairs. He’s definitely got the look of a starer, but with obligation he looks away when I see him. I look away too. But he looks back, unaware that I have the reflection of the window on my side giving him away; as I stare down the reversed image of him back. I wonder why he stares, I haven’t carelessly blown my nose this morning, so I shouldn’t have anything awkward dried on my cheek. He’s probably just a people watcher, absorbing with his eyes rather than documenting with pen. It’s quite alright though; it helps form this unpredictable but enjoyable train experience. As for that entire experience, it’s over now. I have the ride home this evening of course, but my day between now and then has had a good start. Yup, a good start. |
