| 説明 | Location: Hiroshima Peace Park, Hiroshima, JapanName: Molly ParrishProgram: Semester at Sea, Colorado State, Spring 2017Photo Category #2: Exploring local cultures and traditionsDescription: This photo was taken during my time in Hiroshima, Japan. A group of friends had traveled by bullet train so that we could visit the Peace Park and museum dedicated to those who died during the first atomic bombing by the United States in 1945. What I saw in that museum was very eye-opening, disturbing, and even made me feel sick; I had never learned about the atomic bombing from a non-US perspective. This picture still gives me chills, and you can see nearly the entire length of the park from this vantage point. On the far end, you see the A-dome which was the closest building to the hypocenter that wasn't completely destroyed. Next, you see the Flame of Peace that is intended to stay lit until nuclear weapons are eliminated. The cenotaph, the stone in the center, which has the names of every person who died from the atomic bomb, is covered by a structure meant to shield the souls of the victims from the elements. Finally, in the very front, are flowers laid by mourners coming to pay their respects to those who died. It is a day I will never forget, and I have carried it with me every day since my visit in January 2017. |
