説明In July, 1887, years after Johanna had spent some time in an asylum in Christchurch, Henry Beckett could once again no longer bear the eccentricities of his wife and Johanna was brought to Her Majesty’s Prison in Invercargill. The constable who inspected her there witnessed her taking glowing ashes from a fireplace, and thus considered her to be a danger to herself and others. According to one of the medical practitioners who inspected her, she was nervous, unstable, and irritable. She seemed paranoid, accusing the medical practitioner of identity fraud. She would sing and talk throughout the night, often incoherently so. To the second medical practitioner, Johanna complained that the gaol was not constructed well for singing, the ceilings being too low. This medical practitioner also reported that Johanna was suffering from delusions. She believed her nephew, Charles Porter, to be in the same prison as her, and she claimed she was not allowed to see him. The medical practitioner made inquiries, but could find no-one under that name in the prison. In fact, there was indeed a Charles Porter, who was sentenced to three months in prison in November, 1886. Along with two other men, Charles was sentenced for assault. Charles Porter may have been in prison at the time of Johanna’s incarceration, however, it is far more probable that he was incarcerated on the North Island, where he was convicted, not anywhere near Invercargill. As a result of her inspection, she was admitted to Seacliff in July of 1887. At this point she was in her early forties and reportedly anaemic, but in otherwise fairly good bodily health. She was released from Seacliff after a few months, and she returned to her husband, however, this did not last long.
