説明 | calochortus nuttallii (also called Nuttall's mariposa lily) Unbranched stems 6-18 inches tall, with several grasslike leaves at the base and a few short bractlike leaves on the stem. The white, cream or lavender flowers have three large, broad, tipped petals separated by shorter, narrow sepals that are greensih to purplish on the outside and pale on the inside. A large dark spot (glad) at th base of each petal is surrounded by yellow hairs and capped by a broad, purplish crescent.Sego lily is the state flower of Utah, where its sweet, starchy, bulblike roots helped relieve the famine faced by Brigham Young and his followers in 1847. They are said to be very nutritious, raw or cooked, and were eaten by many tribes and widely used by settlers when food was scarce.Prefers dry soils among sagebrush and in grassy mountain foothills from Idaho to NM. |
