説明 | This is the Brueton Gardens in Solihull. Recently retook this stone. They were presented to Solihull by Councillor Horace J Brueton in 1938.Stone marking the opening of Brueton Gardens in 1938. They were presented to Solihull by Councillor Horace J Brueton. It looks like slate (material used for tiles).Found the following on this link pmsa.cch.kcl.ac.uk/BM/WMsoSOxx006.htmA slab of stone standing in the centre of a flower bed in the centre of a circular paved area. The stone is rough and unfinished on three sides, it forms a jagged object similar in effect to pre-historic standing stones. Its simple shape and display of its material quality gives a basic archetypal impression that appeals to modern primitivist sentiments.Brueton Gardens was a gift to Solihull as a memorial following World War One. The stone commemorates the bequest of the gardens to Solihull by Mr Brueton. The gardens were formally opened on at 11 o'clock in the morning on 2 July 1938.(1) The gardens were the gift of Councillor Horace Brueton and included at their opening a brick shelter, wrought iron gates and eight teak seats. The gardens were formally opened by Mrs Brueton using a key presented to her by the Architect Mr Bernard G. Watts. The local newspaper reported at the time that the development was 'the best thing that has been done in Solihull for years'.(2) Whilst the newspaper records the names of those present at the ceremony and of Mr P. Cane (of London) who laid out the gardens and shrubbery and Mr G. Pitchford who 'was in charge of the craftsmanship of the shelter', no mention is made of the boulder stone with its inscription, which may therefore be of a later date.(3) |
