Its main function was in the mounting of artillery on the roof to fire for land defence. It also served as accommodation of garrison troops in bomb-proof casemates. It is the home of the army museum.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fort George (named after King George II of Great Britain) is the fortified summit of Citadel Hill, a National Historic Site of Canada. Citadel Hill was first fortified in 1749, the same year the town of Halifax was founded. The fortifications were rebuilt to defend the town of Halifax from various enemies over time. There has been four different fortifications built and modified on Citadel Hill over the many years. The construction and levelling of the hill dropped the summit by 10 to 12 meters (33-39ft). The fortifications were never attacked but the Citadel was the keystone to the defence of the strategically important Halifax Harbour and its Royal Navy Dockyard. |
