説明 | In 1963 the Atomic Energy Commission detonated a 249 kiloton atom device 2400 feet underground at the Nevada test site. As with most underground tests, the ground covering a wide surrounding area collapsed into a crater as the underground cavity caused by the explosion cools. This structure, which stands directly above ground zero, lies at the top of what was the test shaft. You can see the cables which would have run to data recording trucks outside the test area. The crater is 1800 feet wide and 80 feet deep. This was the first underground test to be felt by a large number of people living in Las Vegas, some 60 miles away. |
