説明 | I stand inside this orchard that iswalled around in graceto touch the treeespalieredagainst the rock; I tastethe juiciestof offeringsfrom branches interlaced.I hold the peachesto my chestwhere once my own were placed.-- Marcy JarvisAuthor notes:St. Agatha was martyred by having her breasts brutally cut off. She is the patron saint of breast cancer victims. I am speaking in her voice though my experience with breast cancer is that of an activist. The espaliered tree is Christ. The many depictions of Agatha that I have found in European churches have inspired an entire series. This is my most recent poem in that series and this architectural coping stone in the ceiling of a church in southwestern Germany is my most recent photo of her.author's note added 7/3/07: the town archivist believes this is actually Mary of Egypt but I see her as Agatha. |
