| 説明 | John Pastor is a Professor at the University of Minnesota Duluth in the Department of Biology. His interests include structure and function of northern ecosystems, applications of mathematics to ecological problems, and scientific illustration. Pastor has created a number of abstract paintings, inspired by the textures of rock and wall paintings found in a cave, known as Chauvet, in Southern France. About thirty thousand years ago, in the limestone region of the Ardèches Valley, people entered the cave and painted images of animals on the walls. These people were exceptional observers of the natural history of these animals. They pushed the limits of their art in the mixing of ochre pigments with fats to make durable paints, in the accuracy and elegance of the composition of their paintings, and in their apparent ability to learn and improve. The best of these paintings convey a sense of awePastor will be speaking about cave paintings and natural history at the 2017 Annual Meeting of the Ecological Society of America on Tuesday, 8 August as part of a double session on the mutual inspiration of science and art.Linking biodiversity, material cycling and ecosystem services in a changing worldLearn more: www.esa.org/esa/esa2017-art-science/ |
