He came to Louisbourg from a hospital in Rochefort, France in 1713 and took on the role of chirurgien major. He built the LaGrange house which served as a hospital during that first winter. This home, however, is not what was reconstructed. The reconstructed Maison LaGrange is based on the home that LaGrange constructed ca. 1723. LaGrange continued to serve as a surgeon in Louisbourg until 1735, when he returned to France due to poor health. After LaGrange left, the house was occupied by his daughter Anne Henriette and her husband Louis Bertin, who had taken over as surgeon. Bertin would continue in that role for the remainder of the French occupation. The house was also occupied during the New England period (1745-1749), serving as a storekeeper's house, and we know that in 1768 it was occupied by a fisherman named Keho. |
