| 説明 | A strongly enhanced image, based on a hand coloured postcard of the Mazda Electric Fountain, Victoria gardens, Grand Parade, Brighton. Copyright Wardell's. No. 724 The original pink and brown sepia tones have been reduced, and the hand painted colours have been enriched. The reverse of the postcard affirms "Copyright to A. W. W. Brighton and Worthing. Printed in England."The reverse also boasts that "THIS IS A REAL PHOTOGRAPH" indicating that the image on the front is a black and white photographic print, and NOT an image printed with ink. The colour of the scene is recreated by hand painting the developed print with coloured dyes. Incredibly, it was economic for WARDELL'S to do this. A detail highlighting evidence of the hand painting can be seen here. The Fountain was given to the town of Brighton in 1930 by Thomson-Houston Ltd following an exhibition. (It has been speculated that the placement - near a cinema - was influenced by Thomson-Houston's involvement in one of several competing talking movie systems.) It was originally internally illuminated at night by colour changing lights. (More information can be seen at My Brighton and Hove.)The General Electric Company heavily promoted and licensed the Mazda light bulb brand, technology and fitting size to other companies in the hope of speeding market dominance. There was even an Edison Mazda / General Electric Mazda Lamp Calendar featuring the works of the artist Maxfield Parrish. |
