説明Story Written by Keith Brandt:I dug through my photos and found this one. In the summer of 1988, Bill and I attended a conference in Flagstaff where Peter was the main speaker. One day we had an excursion to the Grand Canyon. From left to right are Dick Randell, me, Peter, Bill, and Mike Falk. Dick and Mike were students of Peter who graduated before Bill and I arrived in Madison. As I mentioned before, Bill solved a very hard problem that others (including Dick, Mike, and Peter) had studied. While Bill was working on the problem, week after week we (Bill, Peter, me, and a couple other students) would meet each week to discuss our progress. Bill would get up and say “I’d tried this, but I’m not sure about the details. Then I tried this other approach, but here’s where I got stuck,” etc. One day, without revealing any excitement, Bill got up and started his regular routine: “So this part goes like this, and this other part goes like that. Then we work out this detail, and it looks like we’re done.” Peter exclaimed, “Bill! You’ve done it!” Peter was gleaming. His star student had made a breakthrough. Lena, please believe me, I am not embellishing this story.Dick and Mike were both in Iowa City at the time, so Peter got in touch with them to see if they could come to Madison to go over Bill’s solution with him. They came up in the next week or so, and Bill went back through his solution with Peter, Mike, and Dick. They all agreed that Bill’s solution was correct. You know the rest of the story. In case you want to brag on Bill, I have attached a copy of his famous paper. You will see in the references that there is a paper by Dick. Dick’s paper solves a special case of the problem. Bill’s paper builds on Dick’s to solve the more general case.---Consider contributing to the:waa.mydagsite.com/William A. Arvola Memorial Fund
