| 説明 | Temora. The Temora squatting run was established in 1847. A gold rush began in 1879 and the town was laid out and created in 1880 when 20,000 miners were on site. Most buildings were timber framed and several fires swept through the commercial areas several times. Much of the town centre was rebuilt around 1902 after one such big fire. The gold ran out within a year or so and Temora became a grain centre and is now known for its yellow gold- canola. The railway from Cootamundra reached Temora in 1893 and a huge railway station was built about that time. A further transport boost occurred in 1941 when the RAAF training aerodrome was established here. It now has an aviation museum and an excellent mineral and rural museum. Temora’s impressive buildings from the northern end of Main Street are: the Italianate Westpac Bank (built 1907 as Bank of NSW); the ANZ Bank originally a Union Bank (1903);next to it is the Edwardian/Federation style Post Office (1901); and next to the Post Office is an accountancy in a former Art Deco CBC Bank (1908); the Spanish Mission style Hotel Temora (1933) is across the street; the Federal Hotel (1913); John Meagher Spanish Mission style building (1929 for J Thom) is a splendid example and is now the Target store; the Commonwealth Bank (1918); the enormous John Meagher building across the street was built in sections from 1881. Turn left at the roundabout beyond Meagher’s. On the left is Terang and Mortlake a pair of 1890s semi-detached houses; turn left again into De Boos Street and next on the left you will see the Courthouse (1902); next is the Anglican Church (1906); and across the intersection is the stunning and unusual Catholic Church (1907) – along the street to the right of the church is the Convent (1890s); back at the intersection is the Temora Council Chambers (1921); and next to them is the Presbyterian Church (1933) and an original church (1882); across the street is the Catholic School (1934); and next to it is the Temora State School (1883).Turn left at the next intersection and return to Main Street. On the corner is the Railway Hotel (1893). Look down the street to the west and straight ahead is the railway station (1893); and visible from it is Pardey’s three storey flourmill (1908- closed 1973). The town’s Rural Museum is on Junee Road some distance from the Main Street. |
