| 説明 | "Energy in Repose", a larger-than-life bronze sculpture by Henry Hering completed in 1923. It guards the Superior Avenue entrance to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, in Cleveland, Ohio.The base consists of pylons with two courses of heavy hawser, forming a fence around a gigantic lump of coal. A heroic, muscular man in his eaerly 30s, typifying Energy, sits atop another gigantic lump of coal, clad only in a ragged leather apron. In his left hand, he holds a sledge (for breaking coal), hammer-end down."Energy" was considered representative of Cleveland in the 1920s. Not only was the city the hub of Great Lakes coal shipping, but coal provided both the energy and chemicals needed to manufacture steel -- Cleveland's greatest industry. Energy also represented oil, as Cleveland was the home of Standard Oil and was the greatest oil refining hub in the nation from the 1860s to the 1930s. Energy also typified Cleveland's growth: Cleveland had just 43,417 residents in 1860, nearly four times fewer than Cincinnati, five times smaller than Baltimore, 13 times smaller than Philadelphia, and 19 times smaller than New York City. Yet, by 1930, Cleveland was the fifth-largest city in America -- only 30 percent smaller than Los Angeles, and twice the size of Cincy. Cleveland had energy, and lots of it. It was growing, FAST. It seemed strong, and powerful. |
