説明City of Brighton & Hove Blue plaque outside 38-39 Devonshire Place, Brighton, East Sussex, celebrating David Mocatta (1806-1882) who remodelled this building as the City's first purpose built Synagogue in 1838.The building, now converted into luxury flats / apartments is Grade II listed, which requires that the appearance be maintained and preserved. The following biography (relating to his work as an architect) of David Mocatta is from www.sophiecurtis.co.uk/index.php?id=20 [20th February 2009]David Mocatta was a pupil of Sir John Soane, the designer of the Bank of England, on which Mocatta is reputed to have had a significant role. However Mocatta is best known as a designer of synagogues and as architect to the London and Brighton Railway. The terminus at Brighton, built in 1841, was Mocatta's first commission for the company. Built on an artificial plateau 130 feet above sea level, the task of cutting the chalk and building the station employed 3,500 men and 570 horses. The nine-arched arcade was flanked by symmetrical pavilions with screens of columns at each side. The Italianate style of the building was designed to allay anxieties about the railway and its impact on the town. Stylistically in harmony with Brighton's classical architecture, the station was said to resemble 'the palace of a prince'. The first train from London steamed into it on 21 September 1841.David Mocatta also worked with the engineer John Rastrick on the Balcombe Ouse Valley Railway Viaduct in West Sussex which carries the London to Brighton main line over the River Ouse. The viaduct is virtually unaltered from when it was built in 1842 and is considered as one of the most elegant in the country. It is 1,475ft long with 37 spans, each 37ft wide. The viaduct's arches are semi-circular and constructed in red brick. The piers are tapered both side and end-on and divided in two by 10ft wide weight-saving voids, which are capped by six-ring brick arches. Thus the whole has a slender appearance. The parapets are of Caen stone and take the form of classical balustrading. This stone is also used for string courses, pier caps and the two small Italianate pavilions set at each end of the bridge. At its highest point, the bridge is 96ft above the river.
