| 説明 | Children as young as 12 are incarcerated in Bunia Prison. Crimes the children are accused of are general petty theft although a minority are accused of more serious violent crimes. Most are awaiting sentencing which can take up to two years. Some of the children's parents live 5 hours away, they are often unable to attend the children's hearings and therefore their incarceration is prolonged. Up until UNICEF and CIP a local NGOs intervention the boys and girls were locked up with adults, this led to abuses. UNICEF and CIP have worked with the prison authorities to rehabilitate an abandoned wing of the prison to be used only for children and another for women. A future project that has recently been signed is to create a centre outside of the prison were children accused of crimes can be housed. Last year UNICEF and CIP organised a children's day at the prison. The kids asked that this be repeated. |
