| 説明 | New life on an old coalmining site. What you see here is a very special place (and an technological and architectural masterpiece). The "Akademie Mont Cenis" has been erected on the area of a former coal mine from which it took its name (the mine started production in 1875 and closed down in 1978; it was named after the famous Mont Cenis tunnel in the French alps which was a technical sensation at the time of the foundation of the coal mine). What you find now in this place is a center for congresses, meetings and conventions, an education and training center, a community center - and a large and innovative power plant. The latter makes intelligent use of the choke damp which still comes out of the mine shafts and is combined with 10.000 square meters of roof-mounted photovoltaic cells. The complex sets new standards in environmental friendly energy production. It opened in 1999. The glass cubus which you see in the image hosts several buildings and creates a comfortable microclimate for everybody who works there or visits the place. The supporting stands which bear the roof are made from wood. The architecture office which designed the structure is based in Lyon / France. The Akademie Mont-Cenis has a website both in English and in German which is worth a look: www.akademie-mont-cenis.de/I shot this image with an older Tokina MF zoom lens which produces an unusual low amount of linear distortion. (Normally I avoid using zoom lenses for architecture photography). |
