The Glen's many tales and legends even inspired Shakespeare: In Macbeth, the ambitious thane usurps the throne of Scotland after having King Duncan murdered in his sleep at Cawdor Castle. Shakespeare always took a few liberties with historical facts: the murder of Duncan actually took place in Inverness Castle and the real Macbeth was born 400 years before Cawdor Castle was built.
