説明 | Introduced warm-season annual hairy tufted grass to 80 cm tall. Leaf sheaths are densely covered in tubercle-based hairs (i.e. with small wart-like outgrowths at their base); blades are hairy and 5-18 mm wide. Ligules are membranous with a very short hairy rim. Flowerheads are open panicles 10-30 cm long and partly exerted from the leaf sheath; breaks off and blows along at maturity. Spikelets are 2-flowered, 2-3.3 mm long and sparsely paired, with the lower glume less than half the spikelet’s length. Flowers in summer. A native of North America and India, it is a weed of disturbed areas e.g. cultivated paddocks, roadsides and gardens. May cause photosensitisation and death of livestock; sheep are more sensitive than cattle. Palatable to livestock when young and actively growing, but is most toxic at this stage; toxicity mostly occurs when it forms more than half the feed available. |
