| 説明 | Nisbet is quite a common name in Ayrshire and south-west Scotland and history records two related Father & Son Covenanting Nisbets, from Hardhill near Galston. This grave of John Nisbet in the Laigh Kirk in Kilmarnock, is I believe; the last resting place of the younger of those two Nisbets, his father James Nisbet was executed in 1785 in Edinburgh and is remembered on a memorial in Galston.(?) The similarity of names provides lots of potential for confusion and on one history website I have found the following verse ascribed to this John Nisbet memorial in the picture, clearly not so. (That 'another place' referance, though its possible that the stone dating from 1823 may have replaced an earlier memorial bearing this verse below?). Online I have found a picture of the gravestone with the verse inscribed but unhelpfuly it does not specify its location, I suspect it to be in Loudoun or Galston, worth poking around on my next visit."Come reader, see here pleasant Nisbet liesWhose blood doth praise the high and lofty skiesKilmarnock did his latter hour perceiveAs CHRIST his soul to heaven did receiveYet bloody Torrance did his body raiseAnd buried it in another placeSaying "shall rebel lie in grave with meWe'll bury him where evil doers be. see Cloud of Witnesses("Cloud of Witnesses" is quoted from the Book of Hebrews 12.1:-“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”).Major Balfour, who gets a mention on John Nisbet's gravestone was particularly savage in his persecution of the Covenanters, a quick Googling reveals numerous accounts of his deeds including the summary execution by shooting of three men of Polmadie near Rutherglen. Thus he served his God. |
