| 説明 | EMILY SHAWWife, performing partner and eventually widow of African-American stage artist, Walter Shaw, was born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England on 17 Feb 1885. Indications are that her maiden name was Emily Senior. She apparently toured the US with a variety troupe for two years (1899-1901). She later married Walter Shaw in Brixton Parrish Church on 18 Apr 1905. When Walter Shaw died in Bucharest in 1916, she was stranded without her husband or an act and sought permission to go to Russia to seek work. She was in Moscow as late as September 1917, just before the October Revolution.29 Sep 1916 applied at Bucharest for an American emergency passport for Roumania and Russia. “Mrs Shaw is the widow of an American colored citizen who died in Bucarest June 27th, 1916. She is a variety artist by profession and as, owing to the conditions at present prevailing in Romania, she has been unable to obtain work here. I have issued this passport to enable her to reach Odessa and endeavour to obtain an engagement there.” 17 Jan 1917 applied from Odessa, Russia for travel within that country. States that she lived uninterruptedly in various cities in the United States from July 1899 to August 1901. That she married Walter Shaw in Brixton Parish Church, London on 18 April 1905. In September, 1917 Emily Shaw was in Moscow where she attested on Lew Jones emergency passport application. |
