The first event we know about, took place in the spring of 1936. It was a documentary about Australian dogs, doing shepherd work and helping with loading trucks with sheep. It is also known that in Germany and United Kingdom, few years after the Second World War, another kind of exhibitions was taken place.In 1948 the first competition in catalan countries was organized, at the municipality of Ribes de Fresner (Girona). In this first competition there were no established marks and the jury had to go by objective valuation and the attainment and not by obligatory demanded exercises. Nowadays, there are established concrete rules, fixed bases and some very strict marks (see ‘Bases of the championship’), with penalties and rewards, as well as circumstances for unappealable penalties (deliberate bite without reason, repeated disobedience). This first competition were organized by the’ Hermandad de Ganaderos’ and the Town of Ribes de Freser. The jury consisted of the veterinary surgeon and head organizer, Mr. Augustín Franco, Mr. Clemente Creuet and Mr.Joaquim Gassó (known as `el poeta pastor` from Fornells de la Montanya).In 1955 the first competition in the Basque country was kept in Oñati (Guipúzcoa). One of the organizers (deceased 1982) was Mr Jose Ma. Aguirrebalzategui ( `the priest of the dogs’ ), who would be one of the regulars of the competition at Castellar de N’Hug. The competition of Oñati is still kept every year, becoming one of the most important references for this municipality.In 1962, Castellar de N’Hug kept its first competition, during the suspension of the competitions of Ribes de Freser. The leadership of the competition and the jury was in the hands of Mr. Ramón Amils (veterinary surgeon), and later (from 1967) in the hands of Mr. Celedonio García (veterinary surgeon). Nowadays it is organized by Mr. Salvador Juncà i Armengou (President of l’Associació del Concurs Internacional de Gossos d’Atura de Castellar de N`Hug) and by Mr Josep Orriols i Coch (former President de l`Assocació, present mayor of Castellar de N’Hug and President of the ‘Federació de Concursos de Gossos d´Atura dels Països Catalans’).Every year since 1962 the competition has take place in this municipality of Bergerdà.In 1971 the competitions of Ribes de Freser were renewed.In 1985 the first competition at Osseja ( France) was taken place, and later on, in 1989, Canillo (Andorra) kept its first competition.In 1987 they started to have the competition at Llavorsì (Lleida). Rafael de Farrera (shepherd), who in those days participated in the competitions at Castellar de N`Hug and Ribes de Fresner, proposed to the town of Llavorsí to organize the competition, which led to the establishment of an association and the beginning of the competitions, organized since then by the Town of Llavorsí.In 1988 the first competition at Prades (Tarragona) was taken place. Organized by the Town of Prades and ‘la Associació del Concurs de Gossos d’Atura de Prades’. The same year the orders were signed to establish ‘La Federació de Concursos de Gossos d’Atura dels Països Catalans’, formed by the towns of Castellar de N’Hug, Prades, Llavorsí, Ribes de Freser, Canillo (Andorra) y Osseja (France), who organizes ‘el Campeonato dels Països Catalans, in which dogs and shepherds from different places participates. ‘La Federació de Concursos de Gossos d’Atura dels Països Catalans’ has taken a new initiative to promote and boost the work of the Gos d’Atura Català, and in this way enjoy its participation in our competitions. For this reason some incentives has been added for those who participate with a Gos d’Atura Català.Today, ‘La Federació de Concursos de Gossos d’Atura dels Països Catalans’, the Association of Basque Country, northern Basque Country and Navarra and in general all competitions, have a uniformity of criterion about how to apply the rules and concede the appropriate scores. |
