Although possibly para/polyphyletic, the current consensus is that they are either closely related or præcursors to Primates, closest to early Tarsiiformes; also, they have been proposed as a non-primate SG to Eocene-Olocene Primates. Many are too derived to be ancestral to Primates, but the teeth of the earliest spp are strongly indicative of a common ancestor. †Purgatorius is believed to be close to the LCA of Primates and †Plesiadapiformes. A 1987 study linked them with †Adapidæ and Omomyidæ through 9 shared derived features, 6 of which are cranial/dental.
