| 説明 | Pleasure House Oysters Owner Chris Ludford works off his oyster leases in the Lynnhaven River on Sept. 6, 2018. Oyster production levels are far behind what they used to be in the past, yet oyster leases are at an all-time high.An oyster lease is a plot – owned by the state – that can be leased by individuals for the cultivation of oysters for a period of ten years. Virginians can contact the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, who is responsible for mapping and surveying these grounds for use.Studying oyster production per lease, Jennifer Beckensteiner, a Virginia Institute of Marine Science Ph.D. student and Virginia Sea Grant Graduate Research Fellow, is studying why some of these leases may not be reaching their optimal oyster production rate. Beckensteiner will look into socioeconomic variables and social attitudes associated with oyster leases and the growers who lease them. (Photo by Aileen Devlin | Virginia Sea Grant) |
