説明Bert Sutcliffe was born on 17 November, 1923. The page pictured is part of a record about the radio broadcasting of the 1958 New Zealand Tour of Great Britain. The reference to losing Sutcliffe may refer to the broken wrist he suffered near the start of the tour playing against MCC at Lord’s by standing on a ball on the field and falling which meant he missed the first test match (test-cricket-tours.co.uk/page_1741606.html). Bert Sutcliffe was one of the cricket greats of post-war cricket in New Zealand. His highest score was 385 which was the highest-score for a left-handed batter in the world at the time. On the morning of New Zealand’s Boxing Day match against South Africa in 1953, the team heard about the Tangiwai Disaster in which the Fiancee of Bob Blair, one of the bowlers, died. During this match Sutcliffe was knocked out and split his earlobe. But he returned later with a bandage around his head to continue playing. This was in the days before helmets and according to reports he had a rather large bump behind his ear but no signs of fracture so went on to play again.
