説明040708-N-4304S-102USS Dubuque (LPD 8) July 8, 2004--Aviation Electrician's Mate 2nd Class Tony Lio from Torrance, Calif, maneuvers the AN/AQS-24 mine locator, which utilizes a sonar/laser technique to locate and photograph mines. During this Mine Counter Measure operation (MCM), the AQS-24 is lowered into the water and towed behind the MH-53 Sea Dragon helicopter. Lio is assigned to Helicopter Mine Counter Measure Squadron One Four (HM-14). HM-14 is currently attached to USS Dubuque (LPD 8). Dubuque is acting as the command ship for all MCM operations performed in the area. The ship is one of many U.S. ships participating in exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2004. RIMPAC is the largest international maritime exercise in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. This year's exercise includes seven participating nations; Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States. RIMPAC is intended to enhance the tactical proficiency of participating units in a wide array of combined operations at sea, while enhancing stability in the Pacific Rim region.
