説明 | 1969 Mini 9XHatchback PrototypeAt the end of the sixties, Issigonis' thoughts turned towards a small car to replace the successful Mini. His objective was to produce a small car with room for four adults and some luggage, within a competitive specification and at a price 5% below the current Mini price. The outcome was a two-door 'hatchback' design with a more square shape than the current Mini. A new '9X' 850cc engine and transmission, also designed by Issigonis, were fitted, with improved specification and ease of servicing. The engine had a 40% weight saving over the then current Mini engine. The hydrolastic suspension gave way to a new front suspension of vertical struts and independent rear suspension via torsion bars. A direct acting clutch and new alternator were fitted. The new body shape also offered increased passenger and luggage space. Unlike his previous designs, Issigonis' new hatchback did not pass the concept stage as British Leyland's management were unresponsive to his ideas. In many ways, this was a missed opportunity for British Leyland, as European manufacturers such as Fiat, Renault and Volkswagen introduced their own hatchback cars only a few years after Issigonis proposal.Engine: 4 cyl, 850ccTop Speed: not quotedPower: 43bhpCoachwork: two door hatchbackPrice New: not quotedRegistration Mark: none |
